🎃Happy Halloween Witches!! How I Celebrate Halloween Then Vs Now!🎃
My favorite festive day of all time has arrived! Happy Halloween🎃witches!! I love so many things about Halloween, one of them being that it gives me an excuse to be a big ol kid. I can have as many sweet treats as I want. I can persuade hubby to entertain my "witchy shenanigans" by getting him and our fur babies to wear matching "spooky pj's" around the house all day like we live in an old school episode of "The Adams Family!" And, best of all, I can decorate the outside of my home like I really want, displaying many of my skeletons, skulls, pumpkins, and spooky decor with reckless abandon and not have my neighbors side-eye me and clutch their pearls because, "OMG! She's a witch!" 😉
If you're like me, Halloween brings up some very core childhood memories. Yet, try as we may celebrating Halloween now as fully grown adults with grown adult responsibilities & concerns will never be as joyous and magickal as it was back in the day when we were celebrating Halloween as innocent, rambunctious little children that didn't have a care in the world except for how much candy and sweet treats we could shove into our bags and later, shove into our mouths that Halloween evening!
So, in honor of today...my favorite pagan holiday of all time, I'm going to share with you guys some childhood core memories of how I used to celebrate Halloween or Samhein back in the day as a kid, versus how I'm celebrating Halloween today!
🎃HALLOWEEN MARKS A VERY SPECIAL TIME OF THE YEAR🎃
Halloween represents a very special time of the year because it marks the end of harvest season, or the season where one gathers what they have produced during the spring and summer seasons and then stores it up for the dark half of the year, or the fall and winter seasons. This is the time where Mother Earth is no longer "producing" but is now "slumbering" in a resting state. So, our harvests that were gathered during the light seasons are stored up with the intentions of sustaining us through the dark seasons when we are mostly inside keeping warm and nesting.
Think of farmers who grow vegetables and produce in the spring and summer seasons and then pickle and can many of those vegetables in their dark cool cellars in the fall and winter seasons to consume when the ground is no longer conducive for sowing, planting, and reaping. I'm sure that all of my fellow stock pilers and witchy "preppers" can relate!
Halloween also represents the season of the year where the veil between the physical and the spiritual realms is extremely thin making it a very ideal time to commune with our Ancestors and loved ones who are always on standby and ready to communicate with us to offer us guidance and protection, and to bestow upon us more of their Ancestral gifts and power!
🎃 HOW I CELEBRATED HALLOWEEN AS A LITTLE KID🎃
Now as a little kid, I had no idea of what Halloween truly meant culturally and spiritually. I just knew that it was a whole lot of fun and something to look forward to at school, at home, and throughout the entire day! It was magickal. It was the one day where I was allowed to wear a "spooky" or special kind of costume, complete with face paint and all kinds of accessories. It was the day where it got darker outside just a little bit earlier which meant that I had more time to go "trick or treating" in the neighborhood with all the other neighborhood kids, running up to their doors screaming and singing, "Trick or Treat! Treat or Treat! Give me something good to eat!" "Trick or Treat! Trick or Treat! Give me something sweet to eat!" 😊
Ah! Those were the good old days I tell ya; and, I continued to go "Trick or Treating" with the neighborhood kids for many years. And then I had to stop, because the word got around the neighborhood and in the news that there was some "neighborhood weirdo" running amuck targeting the neighborhood kids by putting razors, glass, and needles inside of our Halloween apples and trick or treat candies! And just like that: the magick and innocence of Halloween was stolen and snatched away from me just like my childhood pet would steal a piece of meat from my dinner plate when I wasn't looking!
Suddenly, I had to be supervised on every "Trick or Treat" outing on Halloween by one of my mean, overbearing older cousins. Afterwards, my candy and apples would be dumped out on the kitchen table, unwrapped, dissected, some thrown out, but most of it so cut up and broken apart by my cousin, that I became too afraid and grossed out to eat the stuff! So there went the magick of Halloween for me! It slowly faded away...🥺
Celebrating Halloween at school, however? Now that was a blast! I hated school on "normal" days, because the bullies were always there at school waiting on me like clock work to bully me and to call me ridiculous names while low-key having one of their pre-pubescent school-boy crushes on me at the same time! And considering how rock-headed and remedial they actually were, you would think that they would have had a lot of absences, or hell, at least stayed home when they were sick! But nah! These diabolical gremlins came to school everyday just so that I would be subjected to their grade school tyranny and shenanigans! *Yuck! lol!*
But on Halloween? Ooweeee! It was a different kind of school day! Suddenly those same school boy (and girl) bullies transformed into kind little gentlemen and madams for the day. Instead of bullying me, they were suddenly interested in being kind and friendly to me; and, they were willing to exchange some of my blow pops and candy corn for some of their candies!
On Halloween, my teachers played some of my and my classmates' favorite music and we had all the cake, ice-cream and juice that we could partake! Just the right amount of sugar to keep me happy, high, and buzzed off of sugar all day! *chuckles* I also had so many art projects to create and showcase instead of regular school work which only added to the magick. On Halloween, I felt like I could be myself. I could have fun and express my creative, artsy-fartsy side. On Halloween, I was accepted by all of my classmates, including my classroom bullies! It was my one most magickal day where everything...everything was perfect!
I'm smiling now even as I write this blog article, remembering how magickal celebrating Halloween was for me as a little kid. I would cut out shapes of pumpkins and witches and decorate them with crayons, glitter, and water paint. Then, when it was my turn, I would stand up in front of the class and give my "show and tell" of my top-tier, artistic creations! And, never mind that I always colored outside the lines, because what my teacher and classmates didn't know was that I was a child prodgy at work, baby! I mean, I could have given Van Gogh and Picasso a run for their money!😊
The Halloween festivities didn't stop at school either, because when I got home there was lots of rationing out of my candy for me to eat after dinner too! And, because I didn't have any homework that day, that meant that I could watch spooky cartoons and scary movies all day long until bed time. Think of all of your spooky cult classics such as "Jason," "Halloween," and Freddy Kruger's, "Nightmare On Elm Street!"
And man...let me tell ya, when I was a little kid those movies scared the begeebers out of me! Watching them now though, I just chuckle and smile, because nothing scares me anymore these days at my big old age of "grown as shit!" Nothing except for a random, neighborhood dusty following me around Wally World or Costco trying to flirt with me when I'm by myself, without hubby or one of my fur babies! Because being surveilled and targeted by some weirdo with no social skills or understanding of "go away" is some next level, B-side, horror movie shit, in my humble opinion! Can we say, yuck...and yuck some more, gotdamn it! I tell ya, the streets ain't safe out here for a cute ass witch like myself!
But I digress! 😉
When it came to watching spooky movies as a kid though, I always watched some very cool Halloween cartoons as well, to balance out the hard-core "spookiness" of the day! For example, one of my favorite childhood Halloween cartoons was "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" I watch it every year! In fact, I will be watching it with hubs tonight as a part of our little family tradition.
So yes. I have lots of childhood core memories of celebrating Halloween. In fact, I had another key memory that I had planned on sharing here as well for you guys. But I'll save that one for next year because I don't want this article to get too long because ya girl can write! And if you didn't know, now you know!
🎃HOW I CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN NOW AS A GROWN ADULT🎃
Fast forward to now, obviously I am not a little kid anymore. So, celebrating Halloween looks a whole lot different for me these days. Earlier on, however, when I was a single and extroverted chica in my 20's with knees of steel, I would host Halloween parties with my boyfriend at the time, either at his home or at a venue or club, complete with catered food, costumes & spooky decor, and the neighborhood DJ. We would party and dance from 5:00 in the evening until 5:00 the next morning! My shoes would be sticky, costume and clothes stuck to my sweaty body, hair (or costume wig) looking a hot mess! But that didn't stop me and the rest of our crew from going straight to IHOPS for some after party breakfast, followed by a hot shower and a 6-8 hour nap! *lol*
Yeah. Needless to say, celebrating Halloween looks entirely different for me now as a married and extremely introverted witch. I really don't care to be in or among crowds, or at places where lots of people are, anymore. So these days, I celebrate Halloween in more of an intimate and "homebody witch" kind of way with my little family. For example, I got up early this morning and made everyone--including my furbabies--some pumpkin & cinammon pancakes with syrup and whip cream, and a side of turkey sausage and eggs. 🤤
Hubby headed off to play a game of golf with his dad and brother, and I stayed home with our fur babies and made a simmer witch pot full of cinammon sticks, orange, apple, and lemon slices, topped off with some lavendar and rosemary herbs over the stove. It has our entire home smelling so good! I also refreshed my Ancestor altar and added some small baby pumpkins, candles, Ancestor money, incense and other items, and began communing with my Ancestors inviting them in thru the veil today and for the rest of this week, because we've got some big goings-ons to plan!
After my shower, I put on my spooky "Ghostface pj's" which I will be rocking for the rest of the day because I don't plan on going out at all. I also put some spooky "Pumpkin face" pj's on my fur babies that I ordered online three weeks ago. Hubby has a matching pair of Ghostface pj's like mine which he will slide into when he gets home. He ordered a catered meal for us this evening so that I wouldn't need to cook. If all goes well, it should arrive here in about an hour. It's nothing too fancy, just a baked Rotissirie chicken with large sides of asparagus, baked sweet potatos, corn bread, potato salad and a small New York-style cheesecake which I am going to devour!
Everything is all planned out for us to spend a quiet Halloween evening together. All he has to do is pick up some Gingerale and wine from the store, and all I have to do is decide what Halloween & spooky movies we are going to watch while we all huddle up on our living room sofa and vibe out in the most chillest of ways! And that is how hubs & I will be celebrating Halloween today. Our biggest goal of the evening is to see how many movies we can watch before we doze off into a "snore fest!" lol! So far hubs is the winner, but let me tell you, my furbabies are some heavy hitters and they refuse to be outdone by their dad! So, we shall see who wins tonight!🤣
So how about you? Do you have any big plans for Halloween today? Have you spruced up your Ancestor altars in preparation? Are you going to a Halloween party this evening? Or do you plan on just relaxing and enjoying this sacred and magickal day in the quietness of your home too?
